Hello -

I would like to invite you to attend an upcoming event, "The Climate Crisis:
What People Are Doing in Your Community" that the Toronto West CRAG (Carbon
Reduction Action Group) has been organizing and which I am a member of.

Monday, March 30, 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm
Location: Rm 414, OISE (252 Bloor St West), at the St. George subway station

Please join us for this community action forum where you can find out ways
how you can become involved in the movement to prevent Climate Change and/or
share your ideas for new action.

We will begin by watching Al Gore's new short film, "New Thinking on the
Climate Crisis" followed by a short group discussion.

You will then have the chance to find out what various community groups are
doing, and how you can get involved or start a similar initiative in your
community. The following community organizations will be participating in
the event:

Green Neighbours 21 (a neighbourhood-based organization)
Green Together (household CO2 reduction support)
Kairos (ecumenical justice organization)

How does a city address food production? Artists, architects, landscape architects and other designers are changing the nature of cities to provide opportunities for food production on rooftops, within unused spaces, at home and work, and in the public realm.

60+ projects and products from Canada and abroad – both real and proposed –
are represented through images, text, models and videos.

There are several projects in the show that cover growing food in the city, including:

The Mobile Community Kitchen project that was built by U of T
Architecture students of Adrian Blackwell in Mount Dennis.
The Downsview Urban Agriculture pilot project
The Hellmann's /Evergreen Urban Gardens

City of Toronto Celebrates Its 175th Anniversary on March 6, 2009!

"It is my pleasure to have been responsible, at Mayor Miller's and Toronto City Council's request, for leading the organization of the celebrations to mark the 175th Anniversary of the City of Toronto's Incorporation as a City (in 1834). To celebrate, City Hall will open its doors and invite Torontonians to celebrate our heritage, unity and diversity through music, literature and art. The celebration takes place all day on Friday March 6, 2009.

City Hall will be transformed into an exhibition hall featuring art installations, spoken word, dance and music. Special programming will also commemorate the City's early history. Some of the highlights are:

On March 6th at 12 noon, there will be a Smudging Ceremony with the Mississaugas of the New Credit in Nathan Phillips Square. At 5:00 pm, in City Hall's rotunda, Mayor David Miller and I launch the City of Toronto's commemorative book Toronto's Visual Legacy, followed by Diaspora Dialogues poetry reading, a Fusion performance by Gurtej Hunjan, by Chris Church and by Yoshi and Chie.

At 6:30 pm, in the Council Chambers, R.H. Thompson new play entitled A Unique Meeting - Past and Present, will be performed featuring Mayor William Lyon Mackenzie (played by Eric Peterson) and Mayor David Miller.

Dovetailing with LitCity, at noon, in the Toronto Public Library at City Hall, there will be a discussion - A City of Writers for 175 Years - hosted by Cynthia Good and featuring Diaspora Dialogues, Glen Downie, Ward McBurney, Didier Leclair, Pier Giorgio di Cicco and Valerie Argue.

Finally, the "My City." campaign will be presented as a video installation on the white pillar in the Rotunda, throughout the event.  "My City..." is an initiative created to ignite civic engagement for the 175th Anniversary of Toronto. The installation will be presented by 360extended, an ongoing story-telling project focused on Toronto and created by Faisal Anwar, a local new media artist.

To be part of the "My City..." campaign and installation, send your pictures and texts to www.360extended.com , click on Share Your Story, and tell us what your city means to you!  Those images will be used, along with real-time submissions on the 6th from participants' cell phones, to create the installation.

For a complete posting of events, please visit the City of Toronto's 175th Anniversary Web site at www.toronto.ca/175  or call my office at 416-392-4009.

Hope to see you there!"

Ghazaleh breaks down the needs after 8 months of directing TheStoreFront Community project:

People want to:

  1. meet other interesting people
  2. meet their neighbours
  3. get more engaged in their community
  4. learn more about what is going on
  5. have a neighbourhood hub
  6. pay for what they like
  7. promote what they do
  8. get more business
  9. have a space to do what they do
  10. communicate more effectively to others
  11. empower eachother
  12. be creative
  13. be free
  14. have fun
  15. collaborate
  16. share

And with that she will be risking her time and life again until she builds MEconomist.com. But first, she will be treating it like another (art) project. She has the business plan, but she wants you to help her write it. It will look like art at first, not a 20-page document.

She had this epiphany after the Community Shares meeting on December 2, 2008. Thank you to all the participants. The night is documented and a video will be uploaded online shortly.

TheStoreFront Community research project will end with a mural competition at 955 Bloor West with 10 hand-selected jury members. There will also be an announcement for the final presentation at OCAD with the result of Ghazaleh's observations over the last 8 months, trying to make an open and flat, grassroots space to see what was possible. The project hopes to continue through the OCAD ThinkTank curriculum for other teachers and classrooms to take part in working with the city and neighbourhoods to design for change. The inclusiveness of TheStoreFront Community project with a physical location has brought people together. That is already success. The rest resides in the spirit of diversity, creativity and people to inject life to a place. Thank you to everyone for showing interest and approaching the project. It has been quite an experience.

TakingITGlobal launches V6 Website

Dec 14, 2008

TheStoreFront Community has been a completely grassroots social research project (May - December 2008) in community building. By activating an empty storefront and building a network, Ghazaleh Etezal and the Bloorcourt/Bloordale community started the process of connecting various stakeholders to a shared vision.

The vision itself was simple: to connect people to place, place to projects, projects to programs, and programs to presentations to raise public awareness. Our ultimate goal of building a self-sustaining replicable model for other neighbourhoods was greatly aided by this process. The mission was to design new forms of social innovation and local economic development.

By allowing an organic process to determine the ways in which the project would proceed, our social research agenda was able to first document the ideas that worked best, and second explore how they could be formalised. Our research project also involved observing Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) across the city of Toronto. This effort helped us better understand the common challenges faced by neighbourhoods around the city, and allowed us to propose new and unconventional strategies for surmounting those obstacles.

We aim to branch off to a social enterprise providing a rental space and network hub dedicated to building community.

This project has proven that inclusive dialogue, engagement and creative expression will organically build a sustainable community that empowers and connects people and ideas. The storefront will be the visible network hub that links collective wisdom, knowledge and power to inspire participation and development. The idea is to replicate this concept to other neighbourhoods around the world like a 'micro'poration: 'space'holders, stakeholders and sponsors turnaround a storefront and re-claim public space. It is sustainability in action.

Contact us if you would like to book our space.

We are at the stages of planning the structure for our enterprise launch in the new year. We are providing our space to be used for various activities tailored to art, cultural, social and environmental engagements that will tie into our vision:

If you or your group would like to take advatnage of our reduced rate for November and December, please e-mail us: info[at]thestorefrontcommunity.com

Friday night ARTERY kicked it off with their incredible talent, grabbing the street's attention with their music, food and graffiti. We had an amazing tour on Saturday September 20 by tour-guide Rebecca Higgins who had marked our guide-map for the day. We didn't get around to most of it, but it was fun walking around our neighbourhood in a group. The discussion was great too - quite organic with the subject matter and the conversation kept everyone who attended very engaged. Check the right side bar for some feedback. Photos, videos and minutes from the meeting coming soon.
